Words and Music Project: Lecture
Analyse this! Self-referential songs and their strangeness
Bethany Lowe
Most songs tell a story or evoke an emotional experience, but some use the lyrics to talk about their own musical features. Ranging from Arthur Sullivan’s ‘The Lost Chord’ to Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten’, Dr Bethany Lowe (Associate Professor of Music at Plymouth University) reflects on a wide variety of songs whose own harmony, melody, rhythm, structure, genre, temporality, and even compositional failures are their own subjects. What can we discover from these about the ways that ‘normal’ songs function?
